Virginia

You could spend an entire retirement visiting the hundreds of historical sites in the great state of Virginia, from Washington's Mt. Vernon and Jefferson's Monticello to Colonial Williamsburg to the Civil War battlefields of Manassas and the historic Appomattox Courthouse. What better way to do that than from one of Virginia's many classic golf communities. Choose among a combination ski and golf community, such as the Wintergreen Resort; a colonial style community with many brick homes like Glenmore, just east of Charlottesville and the renowned University of Virginia (also built by Thomas Jefferson); or a modern community like Viniterra, which features a working winery next to its front gate. With Richmond and the metro D.C. area, an urban fix is never more than a few hours from anywhere in Virginia.

A weekend at Wintergreen
Wintergreen Resort in the western mountains of Virginia is a bit of a mixed bag. I am spending the weekend there with my family and we have rented a comfortable two-bedroom home that is also on the...
The Kinloch community: Surrounded by golfing options, and more
After a weeklong visit to Richmond, VA, I am struck by how under-appreciated that metro-area is as a retirement golf destination. It is on no “best of” lists for retirement and, yet, the area is rich...
Kinloch: Best golf course you may not know
Just west of Richmond, VA, Kinloch is the only golf community I’ve encountered in which the golf club is gated and the sophisticated surrounding neighborhood is not. After playing the golf course, that...
Review: Creighton Farms, Aldie, VA
In the good old days – a mere three or four years ago -- communities with golf courses that earned awards of distinction from the likes of Golf Digest and Golf Magazine did not have to work too...
Review: Dominion Valley, Haymarket, VA
According to a recent survey, U.S. homebuilder confidence in the housing market remains at a low ebb, with a rating of just 13 where 50 is average. A component index of the survey that measures...
Quick preview of central Virginia golf
The state of Virginia runs from ocean to mountains, but at its core is terrific golf. I have spent the last week bouncing around the rolling hills of the state’s interior, from which a drive of...
Why did the beer-drinking golfer cross the road?
If you find yourself crossing a county road during a round of golf in the state of Virginia, make sure you guzzle any open cans of beer before you do. Otherwise you may never make it to the 19th...
Yes golf home seekers, there is a Virginia
The state of Virginia is chockablock with excellent golf communities, and they span just four hours from Virginia Beach to the Shenandoahs. Over the next month, I will be exploring golf communities in...
Virginia golf resort sorting out problems
What started on Friday as a simple quest to book a room at a Virginia golf resort and arrange to look at some real estate turned into a day of phone calls to a golf shop, restaurant and Virginia...
Richmond’s Federal Club sold on the cheap
The Federal Club golf course outside of Richmond, VA, has been sold for just $2.6 million, just twice the asking price for one of the brick mansions in the upscale adjacent neighborhood. A local...
Pick and Choose: An á la carte approach to buying a golf home can save you money
Shopping for a home to suit your golfing lifestyle is a little like eating in a fine Parisian restaurant. You can choose the prix fixe meal, where the courses are served for a set (fixed) price, or...
