Check in the mail: How to spend that $1,500


$1,500 will buy you gas for two roundtrip car rides between New England and Pawleys Island, SC, and enough left over for four rounds of golf at famed Caledonia.    


    If you are a U.S. citizen and filed a 2007 tax return, your rebate check is in the mail.  Those who are married and declare one dependent child on their tax returns will receive about $1,500.
    As a public service, here are a few suggestions on how to spend the rebate (all golf related, of course):

Initiation fees at Cedar Creek Golf Club in Aiken, SC, an Arthur Hills designed course.

Gas for 2 round trips between Waltham, MA, and four rounds of golf at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, Pawleys Island, SC. (calculated at $4 per gallon of gas and about 22 miles to the gallon).  

Three days, two nights for two at the Daufuskie Island Resort, including golf each day on the Melrose (Nicklaus) or Bloody Point (Weiskopf) courses.  Ferry ride to the island included (no cars allowed).

Green fees at Kiawah Island Ocean Course, plus $1,200 in spending money for the non-golfing spouse to shop in Charleston, SC.

Round trip airfare Newark, NJ to Austin, TX; six nights golf package at Barton Creek Resort and Spa, including golf on the resort's four courses and daily breakfast.

Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend, May 23 - 25, for two at the University of North Carolina - Asheville, including two nights lodging at the Grove Park Inn and one round of golf on the hotel's Donald Ross-designed course.



After a round of golf at the fine Nicklaus-designed Melrose Club at the Daufuskie Island Resort, try your hand on the hotel's bowling lawn.
