Developer relents; our reader gets the green light
Tuesday, 11 March 2008
You might have read here a few weeks ago [click here for article] that one of our faithful readers was trying to build an environmentally sensitive, or "green," home in South Carolina but was running into something called a "preferred builders" program.  Developers use such programs to control the number of builders on property and, some believe, as part of an "old boys network."
But practical good sense has trumped the traditional arrangement and our reader has just received the go-ahead to bring in his own experienced builder to develop a green home.  Good for him, good for the developer and good for the planet.

Same situation

Hi Larry,
I have been watching this story closely. We own property in beautiful golf course community in South Carolina (Mount Vintage to be exact). We have had the same desire, to build a state of the art, green built, LEED certified home (most health reasons for my wife and altruism). We were very worried because our developer has a select "Master Builder list" that is in place to ensure the quality of the community and the residents investment in the community as a whole. Through professional relationships and much research we have found a builder who is also a professor at a Major University in the Building and technology department at his University. He has agreed to take on our Project. When we presented our desires, and the Builder's/Professor's credentials to the developers, our worries were put to rest. The developers at Mount Vintage Properties looked at our proposal holistically and saw the upside from every perspective and approved our request. I will periodically update you on how our project is progressing. Thanks again for your continual efforts to look at the Golf course community experience from all perspectives. Your friend, Brent.
